Donald MacIntosh bought the tavern in 1820 and operated it as Cleveland House and later as City Hotel until it was destroyed by fire in 1845. The hotel was bought by the Van Sweringen brothers in the 1920s and built by them as part of the Union Terminal complex in Cleveland, which was completed in 1930. Large meetings that used to come to Cleveland went elsewhere, but hotel occupancy in Cleveland rose as the city's reputation as a destination for large conventions grew.
By 1992, Downtown Cleveland had 6 modern full-service hotels operated by national chains and acquired 850 new hotel rooms.
