Café 56: healthy, fresh, simple and affordable

May 27, 2009

After a day of exhausting shopping or errand-running, one of the favorite places in Beachwood to refuel is Café 56 — a small eatery that features healthy, fresh, simple food at affordable prices.

Patrons can order at the counter and seat themselves in the restaurant’s large dining room, which features both tables and cozy booths that are mostly naturally lighted by the storefront’s top-to-bottom windows. The décor is minimal and neutral, putting all of the emphasis on Café 56’s colorful dishes that feature only the freshest vegetables and meats.

The menu offers a wide variety of playfully named wraps, sandwiches, salads, soups and stir fries.

If you’re in the mood for a salad, try the “Big Fat Greek Salad”, which is loaded with crisp romaine lettuce, crunchy garlic croutons, soft goats milk feta, plump tomato slices, mild red onion, juicy kalamata olives and green cucumber slices. Add grilled chicken, flank steak or salmon for an extra charge.

The “Millionaire” salad is also an excellent choice, featuring mixed and wild greens, crumbled blue and brie cheeses, artichoke hearts, cranberries, blueberries, and strawberries.

If you’d rather a sandwich, try the “American Idol”—piled high with roasted turkey, Swiss cheese, romaine lettuce, tomato, bacon and honey mustard, or the Waldorf salad spinach wrap, which is stuffed with chicken salad, red globe grapes, crunchy walnuts and bits of diced apple.

If soup is your thing, you’ve got to try the delicious portobello bisque, made with fresh cream, juicy mushrooms and just the right amount of spices. Wok-seared rice or noodle bowls made with fresh chicken, steak, salmon, veggies and a choice of five sauces are also available.

Dress is casual and reservations aren’t required or needed. Bon appétit!
