Slyman's Deli: a pillar in Cleveland culture

Those who really know Cleveland are familiar with Slyman’s Deli — a landmark breakfast/lunch spot that’s become a pillar in Cleveland culture.

Open only for breakfast and lunch, Slyman’s serves up serious sandwiches and breakfast items that are as messy as they are divine. The extensive deli sandwich choices at Slyman’s mean you’ll have to become familiar with the lingo required to prove that you’re really a true-blooded Clevelander.

Corned beef is the staple ingredient of all things Slyman’s, so how will you order yours? If you’d like yours with mayo and horseradish, ask for the “cake.” Is your idea of corned-beef heaven wheat with American cheese? Ask for the “Wack.”

Perhaps you’d like something a bit more traditional: just mustard? “Original.” Mustard and Swiss cheese? You’ll want to order a “smurf.” Mayo only? You’ll need the “bargain.” (For more sandwich lingo, visit the Slyman’s website.)

Of course, Slyman’s doesn’t stop at corned beef (although you haven’t really had Slyman’s until you’ve had some). Pastrami, salami, tuna, roast beef and even barbecued brisket hold important spots on the menu. Not in the mood for a deli sandwich? Slyman’s still has you covered. Burgers, hotdogs and even turkey dinners complete with mashed potatoes and gravy are crowd pleasers, as well.

You can spend as little as about $3 for the grilled cheese up to $10.50 for a hot turkey, beef or barbecue sandwich.

One thing you won’t want to forget when you place your Slyman’s order is the New York style cheesecake for dessert. That, and a whole bunch of napkins.
