Balaton Restaurant: if you're hungry for Hungary

Published: Jun 11, 2009

Having served authentic Hungarian cuisine since 1964, the folks at Balaton Restaurant in Shaker Square know a thing or two about Wiener schnitzel. Indeed, this Hungarian staple — a thinly-sliced veal filet that’s breaded and deep fried, served with applesauce and latkas, or potato pancakes — is Balaton Restaurant's claim to fame.

Packing big taste into a small space, Balaton combines casual dining with an upscale feel for a truly enjoyable experience. Crisp, white tablecloths and lots of big, bright windows make for an atmosphere that's warm and inviting — a great place for lunch with mom or dinner with a significant other.

Aside from Wiener schnitzel, Balaton offers an array of other fresh Hungarian dishes. Try the stuffed cabbage — spiced beef, peppers, onions and rice rolled into cabbage leaves and baked with a delicate tomato sauce. The Lecso, a summer stew made with fresh vegetables and rice, and authentic goulash, a spicy soup made with beef, onions and paprika, are also tasty choices.

A large selection of Hungarian wines is available to enjoy with your entrée. Imported from the Balaton Lake region of Hungary, these wines are often robust and full-bodied. If you prefer, a selection of domestic varieties are also available.

Be sure to leave room for Balaton’s famous Palacsinta pastries stuffed with fresh fruits, nuts and sweet cheeses. If you’re in the mood for chocolate, the seven-layer Hungarian cake, or Dobostorte, which is filled with decadent chocolate buttercream, is sure to please.

Dress at Balaton is casual, and reservations are appreciated, especially on busy weekends.
