Henry's at the Barn: fine dining with a fresh twist

Hidden in a quiet cove of antique shops and specialty boutiques in Avon’s Olde Village is Henry’s at the Barn — a fine-dining establishment with a fresh Southern twist.

Henry’s at the Barn makes its residence inside a renovated old barn that has been updated, yet still captures the essence of its demure colonial beginnings. An outdoor patio with wrought-iron furniture, cobblestone paths and a large fire pit is a favorite spot for summertime regulars.

The interior of this inimitable establishment is reminiscent of it 19th century founding; yet it still provides the elegance and grace of white tablecloths, quiet music and soft candlelight. The large bar is made of finished driftwood from Lake Erie, and the fire in the stone hearth warms both the hands and hearts of guests as it crackles delightfully and casts its golden light.  A cocktail lounge is nestled in the barn's loft.

Henry’s at the Barn's cuisine is both haute and comforting — a difficult task that chef Paul Jagielski has perfected with ease. Incorporating items like stone-ground grits, collard greens, spicy andouille and braised pork belly gives Henry’s menu its southern twang. Jagielski describes the fare as "Carolina Low Country" — a delicate blend of traditional Southern comfort-style ingredients with Caribbean and Cajun influence.

Menu items include cast-iron grouper with pear, potato and caramelized onion succotash; crisp walleye with roasted garlic, tomato and chestnut sweet potato pudding; New York strip steak with buttermilk-roasted Vidalias, blue cheese and sweet potato and pecan casserole with a bourbon demi-glace; and braised Carolina pork belly with cranberry pecan beans and mustard glaze with fried okra slices. Buttermilk fried chicken with traditional fixins’ even makes a delicious appearance.

Henry’s wine list is extensive and includes German Riesling, Australian Shiraz, African Pinot, California merlot and dozens of others. A full-service bar is also available for cocktails of all kinds.

Reservations are appreciated, and dress is business casual.
