The Great Lakes Brewing Company: a cornerstone in Cleveland
Published: Mar 9, 2009
The Great Lakes Brewing Company has been a pillar in Cleveland culture since 1988. With dozens of hand-crafted ales and delicious food, this restaurant and pub is well known around the Cleveland area and beyond.
A full on-site brewery is available for touring. See how Great Lakes crafts their famous, award-winning brews -- from the sweet, yet dry Dortmunder Gold to the Burning River Pale Ale with a hint of citrus or the holiday-favorite Christmas ale, which has just a touch of ginger and cinnamon.
Patrons can also enjoy exclusive brews that are only served at the pub itself, such as the Cleveland Browns Ale, Engine 20 Pale Ale and award-winning Moondog Extra Bitter Stout.
The food at Great Lakes Brewing Company is as diverse as its beer selection -- and no less impressive (probably because many of their distinctive brews are used in the recipes!) For starters, try the Christmas Ale Sausage with braised cabbage and apples or the PEI Mussels with Hungarian sausage in a Burning River Pale Ale broth. For your entree, consider the maple-glazed salmon with pecans, bratwurst and three cheese and potato pierogi or the oven roasted walleye with artichokes, sun dried tomatoes and red onions.
For dessert, try the signature Great Lakes bread pudding with bourbon butter sauce or the Bailey's Flight, made with Irish cream, chocolate mint and caramel served in an edible "shot glass." (This one's for the grown-ups only!) The restaurant also has a great kids' menu featuring favorites like chicken strips with ranch dressing and peanut butter and honey sandwiches for just $4 each.
Reservations are not required but may cut down on seating time on the weekends. Dress is casual. On the days of the Cleveland Indians' home games, Great Lakes Brewing operates an eco-friendly shuttle that runs on used restaurant oil. Details on the shuttle are available here.
