El Tango Taqueria on Madison is friendly, fabulous and fun

Aug 30, 2009

At El Tango Taqueria in nearby Lakewood, there's always something yummy cooking in la cocina. When the smell of spicy chipotle peppers and smoky cumin mix with the backdrop full of vivid colors and Mexican hats, pottery and cacti, you'll know you've stepped into a restaurant that is inspired by all things fiesta.

This small west side eatery packs big flavor and burritos that are the size of a bed pillow-- something you may not expect out of such a tiny establishment. The dining area consists of only about a dozen tables and takes up a quarter of the establishment's floorspace-- the rest is designated for the kitchen. And the kitchen, friends, is where the magic happens.

You'll place your order at the counter and head over to a seat of your liking, and before you know it, your food will have arrived piping hot at your table. The smells of food cooking in the back will most likely have your mouth watering and your tummy grumbling, but since the service is fast, you won't have to anticipate your glorious El Tango meal for long.

The prices at El Tango Taqueria are muy pequeno (very small!), but the dishes certainly aren't. Try the fish tacos on for size-- freshly made corn tortillas with grilled snapper and crunchy veggies, or the pulled pork burrito with spicy rice, black beans and homemade salsa.

A large variety of delicious entrees is also available. You've just got to try the Yucatan Conchinita Pibil-- Mayan barbecued pig with grilled pineapple and spicy poblano sauce. Other entree favorites include the Pollo Alma-- a honey and cinnamon roasted chicken breast, and the Ropa Vieja-- a Venezuelan dish made with roasted potatoes and tender beef.

To finish your meal, be sure to try a cup of El Tango's Mexican coffee or a glass of their homemade vanilla lime lemonade.

Dress is casual and reservations aren't required.
