Lakewood's Melt is cheesy, but in a good way

Kraft Singles, be prepared to be put to shame.

One of Lakewood's hottest eateries is Melt, a true monument to the grilled cheese sandwich. Of course, melt isn't serving up any wimpy, skinny sandwiches like you'd make at home. Melt's monstrous menu features 30 kinds of towering, juicy, ooey-gooey goodies that will have you wondering why the heck you haven't been eating there for years.

When you take an all-American staple like the grilled cheese sandwich and combine it with everything from complex flavors like sauerkraut and pirogi (rightly named the “Parmageddon”) to mouth-watering favorites like bacon and honey ham, you just can't help but get the feeling that your old grilled cheese sandwich just isn't in Kansas anymore.

The restaurant is upbeat, fun and decidedly different from other West side eateries. It's fun for the whole family, yet still grown up enough to be enjoyed by daytime professionals who just want to let their inner child run free, if only for a moment.

Try the Hot Italian, with ham, salami and pepperoni with sun dried tomato pesto and provolone ($10.50), the Lake Erie Monster with beer-battered walleye, American and jalapeno tartar sauce ($12), or the Municipal Stadium Magic, with local bratwurst, kraut, grilled peppers and American cheese ($9).

There are also a variety of burgers, like the chili burger with smoky chili, cheddar, grilled onions and sour cream ($10) and steak sandwiches, like the Cleveland Cheese Steak with portabella mushrooms, peppers, onions and provolone ($11.50).

All menu items come served with hand-cut fries and a sweet coleslaw and are served on freshly baked bread. For a complete menu, click here.

The bar at Melt is stocked to the top with local brews, wines and fresh cocktails of all kinds. There's nothing quite like a buttery cheese sandwich and an ice-cold Great Lakes beer for dinner. Trust me, if you walk into Melt feeling stressed and depressed, you'll walk out happier than you've felt in months. (There's something about hot, gooey cheese and a tall Dortmunder Gold that will do that to you.)

A kids menu is available for the little tikes, and reservations aren't required unless you plan on bringing a large party. Patio seating is available, weather permitting.
