Cuyahoga Irish Cultural Festival: wee price, big fun
Published: Oct 7, 2009
It's that time of year again, when the song of a wee' fiddle can be heard in the sticky summer air and the smell and taste of freshly baked Irish soda bread fills your senses. It's Cleveland's annual Irish Festival, a time when everyone has at least a bit o' Irish in 'em — if only for this special weekend.
From professional Irish dancers to excited amateurs, the sound of a screamin' Erin fiddle is sure to get your feet moving. Don't be surprised if you unexpectedly break out in dance at least once while you're making rounds through the fairgrounds: It happens to everyone.
This year's musical entertainment features the talents of more than two-dozen local acts, such as Brendan Shine, The Screaming Orphans and Fintan Stanley. From dancing to singing, these impressive groups are sure to have your toes tapping.
A petting zoo; magic show; Irish story-tales; dance lessons and Irish-themed art projects are planned for the little ones and grown-ups alike.
Of course, traditional Irish food takes center stage at the festival alongside the musical talent. This year, local restaurants like Sullivan's and Ahern Catering will be on hand to deliver authentic Irish flavor to the masses. Corned beef; boxty and sausage; fish and chips; roast lamb; bangers and meat pies are just some of the delicious choices on the fair's menu this year.
Traditional fare like corn dogs, funnel cakes and fried onion petals will also be available.
Many Irish beers will be on tap, so drink up!
The festival runs from July 24-26 and is located at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds. For more information, visit the Irish Festival website.
