Severance Hall: grand home for a grand orchestra
Located in University Circle is one of the most recognizable buildings in Cleveland — Severance Hall. Built by Cleveland-based architecture firm Walker and Weeks in 1931, Severance Hall was the gift of John L. Severance, then-treasurer of the Standard Oil Company, and good friends with Standard’s owner, John D. Rockefeller. It was one of the first concert halls designed and built to accommodate radio broadcasts.
Constructed of limestone, Severance Hall presents a breathtaking neo-classic theme similar to ancient Greek architecture. Home to the world-renowned Cleveland Orchestra, the music halll underwent a $36 million renovation in 1998, adding a fine restaurant and trinket shop and improving the facility’s acoustics.
Sammy’s Restaurant, located inside the Hall, is an great place to enjoy a glass or two of your favorite wine and a meal that is as satisfying as the music itself. A full-service buffet features items such as beef tenderloin with horseradish mousse and ancho aioli; tomato basil chicken stuffed with fresh mozzarella and golden tomato sauce; broiled cod with shrimp salsa; and roasted Yukon potatoes with pearl onions and rosemary butter. The buffet is $40 per person ($22.95 for children) and reservations are required.
