John Christ Winery: a place for tasteful tasting

Published: May 12, 2009

John Christ (pronounced “kreest”) Winery on Walker Road in Avon Lake opened its doors in 1946 and has been impressing guests ever since.  With more than a dozen varieties that are produced on the premises, John Christ Winery is a much loved place for socializing and relaxing on a quiet evening or weekend.

The French Tudor-style building is reminiscent of what might be seen in the Burgundy countryside. Inside, a celebration of vivid grapevines adorns the walls, and rich, dark woods make up the tasting bar to provide a relaxed, upscale atmosphere.

Soft music and gentle lighting create a quiet ambience perfect for social gatherings with loved ones. An outdoor patio features white linen-adorned tables and the delicate glow of candlelight.

John Christ’s wines include such favorites as raspberry, blackberry and blueberry (seasonal) — sweet favorites with bold fruit flavor for a twist on the traditional grape wines. Other sweet varieties include the Pink Catawba, a blush wine with a spicy, sweet flavor and tart finish, and the best-selling “Special Blend” — a tasty combination of Concord and Niagara grapes.

Other popular varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, a dry red with strawberry, licorice and elderberry notes; Vidal Blanc, a dry white with a smooth pineapple finish; and Cayuga; a medium sweet white with gooseberry, rhubarb and Granny Smith apple notes.

John Christ offers scheduled wine tastings, which pair a variety of cheeses and fruits with popular wines. Retail and tasting hours are:

Monday-Wednesday: 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Thursday: 10 a.m. - 11 p.m.
Friday & Saturday: 10 a.m. - midnight
Sunday: 1 - 6 p.m.

The bar at John Christ is full-service and features a variety of beer and spirits in addition to its famous wines. Bar hours are:

Thursday: 5 p.m. - 11 p.m.
Friday: 5 p.m. - midnight
Saturday: Noon - midnight
Sunday: 1 - 6 p.m.

Dress at John Christ is casual, and reservations aren’t required.
