French Creek Nature Center: animals in action
The French Creek Nature Center in Sheffield is a great place for both children and parents to learn something new about their favorite animals and the environment. Operated by the Lorain County Metroparks, this versatile center is home to a large auditorium; virtual classroom; indoor playground; several live-animal aquariums; nature exhibits; library; wildlife observatory; art room and gift shop.
With dozens of events each month, the center provides fun and learning for everyone. Many events are free, while others charge a nominal fee. From arts and crafts to movies, nature talks and presentations, the center has a variety of events that cater to everyone aged one to 100.
Popular ongoing programs like “Breakfast with the Birds”, which allows patrons to enjoy pastries and coffee for just $3 while watching local birdlife in the wildlife observatory, and “Hike for Your Health”, a free program that focuses on weight control and fitness goals, meet several times per month.
Visitors can enjoy either a brisk jog or leisurely stroll through several miles of hiking trails which twist through the deciduous forest behind the facility. The French Creek Nature Center hiking trails are an ideal place to exercise or simply to take in the breathtaking natural surroundings. Several bridges cross a babbling creek that winds its way through the park. If you look carefully, you’re sure to spot a thirsty deer or rabbit taking a sip of cool water from its calm banks.
A two-level indoor playground provides hours of fun and learning for the little ones. From the climbing wall to the animal identification station, the little cubs are sure to have a great time.
